Not Just A Handbag – Anya Hindmarch ‘Crisp Packet’ Clutch

This clutch from Anya Hindmarch is not just another bag but a little piece of wearable art. Why is that? First because of the complexity of the process that led to getting the Crisp Packet bag the right design, perfecting the high-shine finish and vertical opening, witch took months of hard work. And second because the handbag was made in Italy, Florence in a factory that specialises in jewellery.

The idea of creating luxurious versions of everyday objects has long been a fascination for Anya Hindmarch house, and what better object to start with than with the humble crisp packet. They started with the real thing: a packet of Walker’s Crisps (salt and vinegar, of course) which they photographed it from every angle to create a 3D rendering. A computer- generated render is used to test different shapes, colours and textures. Once they were happy with the design they then created the first three-dimensional prototype, which was tested for ergonomics and wearability.To get the colour exactly right, they first add coloured ink to transparent varnish, which they sprayed in thin layers until they’ve obtained the perfect shade. It takes seven hours to make each bag, which is then varnished by hand as there isn’t a machine that can work with the difficult angles and sharp corners.

The waiting list ahead of the first delivery was so long that by the time the clutch arrived, it sold out in three hours. Stock was replenished but several colours still remain sold out. The next drop, expected mid-March, already has a waiting list.

“The crisp packet was inspired by my love of everyday objects which are made in the most luxurious way by incredible craftsmen,” Hindmarch says. “It is very complicated as it is completely asymmetrical and took many goes to get right. It was a real labour of love. But we love it.”
